LAKE SUPERIOR & ISHPEMING operates around 54 miles from Marquette, Michigan to various iron ore mines and processing plants in the area. Unfortunately my only visit coincided with a strike in the mining industry which had temporarily shut down the railroad, and to make things worse it was raining! The railroad kindly allowed permission to visit their yard at Eagle Mills where a pair of rare General Electrics, 2300 a U23C in green livery and 2502 a U25C in the newer red livery, awaited a resumption of business. 7 September 1990. - mike-walker's Photos
Shortlines are those small companies which toil away on branch and secondary lines providing a vital link between customers and the big main line roads. Some have been in business since their lines were built others have come about by taking on lines the big boys deemed uneconomic. Whilst some shortlines use locos still bearing the faded colours of former owners, many have impressive, colourful paint schemes. As with most things, the shortline world is changing as a few conglomerates sweep up the independents.
