PROVIDENCE & WORCESTER can trace its origins back to 1845 but was later absorbed into the New Haven. It regained its independence in 1973 after the NH was absorbed by Penn Central and has since grown to become a major regional railroad in southern New England. 2205, a GE U23B ex-CR 2790, and 2215, a GE B23-S7 which was the first Super-7 rebuild, were at the Worcester MA engine house. 5 October 2001. - mike-walker
Shortlines are those small companies which toil away on branch and secondary lines providing a vital link between customers and the big main line roads. Some have been in business since their lines were built others have come about by taking on lines the big boys deemed uneconomic. Whilst some shortlines use locos still bearing the faded colours of former owners, many have impressive, colourful paint schemes. As with most things, the shortline world is changing as a few conglomerates sweep up the independents.
