READING & NORTHERN is a major regional railroad serving the anthracite country of east central Pennsylvania centered on Port Clinton. The mostly former Reading trackage was acquired from Conrail in 1990 and the company now operates around 300 miles. Shortlines are those small companies which toil away on branch and secondary lines providing a vital link between customers and the big main line roads. Some have been in business since their lines were built others have come about by taking on lines the big boys deemed uneconomic. Whilst some shortlines use locos still bearing the faded colours of former owners, many have impressive, colourful paint schemes. As with most things, the shortline world is changing as a few conglomerates sweep up the independents.
